Abstract

Abstract This paper explores the concept of pragmatic competence in the context of second language acquisition (SLA). It argues that while linguistic competence focuses on grammatical accuracy and vocabulary knowledge, pragmatic competence emphasizes the appropriate use of language in social contexts, including cultural nuances and conversational implicature. The study reviews current research in SLA literature, highlighting the challenges learners face in developing pragmatic competence, and examines the various strategies and pedagogical approaches that have been proposed to address these challenges. It further discusses the importance of incorporating pragmatic training into language curricula and the role of language immersion and cultural exposure in fostering native-like pragmatic competence. The findings suggest that pragmatic competence is a critical aspect of successful language learning and that educators and learners must acknowledge its significance in the overall process of SLA.
